New Delhi: The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections have produced a surprising result in the Bijwasan constituency, with former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kailash Gahlot securing a landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gahlot, who dramatically defected to the BJP just months before the election, is currently leading by a substantial margin of more than 6,000 votes, significantly outpacing his rivals.
Trailing significantly behind Gahlot is AAP candidate Surender Bhardwaj with 30,350 votes, while Congress’ Colonel Devinder Kumar Sehrwat is further behind.
Gahlot’s decision to leave the AAP, a party he was once a close confidante of Arvind Kejriwal, created significant ripples in Delhi’s political landscape before the elections. In his resignation letter to Kejriwal, Gahlot levelled serious accusations against the AAP, alleging that the party prioritised “political ambitions” over public service and focused on its political agenda rather than citizen’s rights.

Bijwasan, carved out in 2008 after delimitation, encompasses a diverse range of areas including Dhulsiras, Vasant Kunj, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, Nangal Dewat, Bijwasan, Samalkha, Bamnauli, Kapashera, Shahbad Mohammadpur, Rajnagar, and parts of Dwarka.
In the 2020 election, this constituency witnessed a very close contest, with AAP’s Joon narrowly defeating BJP’s Sat Prakash Rana by a mere 753 votes.
