New Delhi: The Delhi Assembly elections of 2025 has turned out to be a closely contested battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While AAP is seeking a third consecutive term, the BJP is eyeing to regain control of the capital. A total of 699 candidates, including 603 male and 96 female contenders, are contesting for the electorate’s mandate.
At present, the Delhi assembly consists of 70 members, directly elected from 70 constituencies. In the 70-member Delhi assembly, 36 are required for gaining majority. A party needs to win 36 seats to form the government in the national capital. The early trends showed that BJP was winning on most seats and was cruising to victory.
The Delhi Assembly election took place in a single phase on February 5. Both the BJP and AAP have exuded confidence in forming the next government. Meanwhile, the AAP claimed on Saturday that attempts were made by BJP to poach its candidates. The BJP rubbished the allegations.
BJP leading on 40 seats
The BJP is leading on 40 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, according to early trends. If the trend holds, the saffron party will form the government in the national capital for the first time in 27 years. Additionally, it will mark the return of a single-party rule in both the state and the national capital after a decade.
Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP’s poll campaign featured the slogan “Delhi Chali Modi Ke Sath.” The party focused its campaign around issues central to Delhi and chalked out its plans for the national capital over the next five years.
The Aam Aadmi Party, aiming for a third consecutive term, is currently leading on 28 seats. The party, which rose to power on its anti-corruption stance, has faced a slew of graft allegations, and its top leadership spent several months behind bars.
