New Delhi: Ahead of the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, The new US Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, and India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had a special phone conversation.

In an introductory call, Hegseth and Singh committed to the US-India Major Defense Partnership. “The leaders agreed to pursue an ambitious agenda to accelerate our operational cooperation and defense industrial and technology collaboration to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific,” the US Department of Defense said in a readout.

“The Secretary noted he looks forward to holding the next 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue and concluding the next ten-year U.S.-India Defense Framework this year,” it added.

Rajnath Singh’s Statement: Strengthening India-U.S. Defense Cooperation

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh shared details of the conversation on X (formerly Twitter) via his official handle:

“I had an excellent telephonic conversation today with U.S. Secretary of Defense Mr. Pete Hegseth. I congratulated him on his appointment as U.S. Defense Secretary on January 25, 2025. We reviewed the current defence cooperation and discussed ways to deepen and broaden India-U.S. defence relations.”

“We agreed to develop an ambitious agenda that will include operational, intelligence, logistics, and defence-industrial cooperation. I am excited to work closely with Secretary Hegseth.”

Defence Deals That Could Be Finalized in Modi-Trump Meeting:

  1. Advanced Fighter Jets for Indian Air Force
    • There is a proposal to purchase modern fighter jets from the U.S., including the F-21, Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, and F-15EX Eagle. These aircraft will enhance India’s aerial combat capability and improve defence coordination with the U.S.
  2. Modern Helicopters and Drones for the Indian Navy
    • The MH-60R Seahawk helicopter (a $2.8 billion deal) and Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) will boost the Indian Navy’s reconnaissance and strategic capabilities.
  3. Military Exercises and Training Cooperation
    • India and the U.S. have agreed to further enhance exercises like Tiger Triumph (a tri-service exercise) and Malabar (a naval exercise).
    • India may receive additional military training and technical knowledge under the U.S. IMET (International Military Education and Training) program.
  4. Defense Industrial Cooperation and Arms Manufacturing
    • The two nations have agreed to promote investment from US defence companies in India and accelerate joint production projects. Discussions will also take place regarding sharing sensitive defence technology under the Industrial Security Agreement (ISA).

Strategic Significance of India-U.S. Defense Partnership:

  1. Strategic Advantage Over China and Pakistan
    • India and the U.S. are working together to balance China’s aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.
    • Cooperation within QUAD (India, US, Japan, Australia) will be further strengthened.
  2. India’s Role in Global Power Balance
    • The U.S. may assist India in enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal Initiative, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
    • The U.S. could provide additional military aid to enhance India’s security capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
  3. What Does India Gain?
    • The Indian military will gain access to cutting-edge weapons and defence systems.
    • India will have easier access to the latest military technology from the US.
    • Increased participation in military exercises will broaden the Indian military’s global experience.
    • India will gain a strategic advantage over adversaries like China and Pakistan.

This strengthened defence partnership marks a new era in Indo-US relations, promising enhanced security and cooperation between the two nations.
