‘Zero tolerance’: Amit Shah orders crackdown on terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a decisive offensive against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, directing security agencies to adopt a “ruthless” approach with the ambitious goal of achieving “zero infiltration.” In a high-level review meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday, Shah emphasised the need for a complete eradication of terrorist networks, leaving no room for complacency.

Shah’s directive followed a second consecutive high-level security review meeting on Tuesday. The statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the determination of the government to achieve its ambitious objective.

“Our goal should be to uproot the existence of terrorists,” he said.

The Home Minister stressed the urgent need to dismantle the entire ecosystem supporting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the weakening of this ecosystem as a result of sustained and coordinated governmental efforts. He specifically targeted the flow of terror funding derived from the narcotics trade, demanding swift and decisive action to curb this crucial lifeline for terrorist activities.

Shah stated that this narco-network is actively facilitating infiltration and supporting terrorist operations.”Terror funding from the proceeds of the narcotics trade has to be curbed with alacrity and rigour,” he said.

The meeting was attended by key officials including Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Central Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Director General of Police, to assess the current security situation and strategize for future actions.

Shah’s commitment to a comprehensive security overhaul is further emphasised by his instructions to fill vacancies in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), for enhanced forensic capabilities to strengthen investigations and prosecutions. The two consecutive, five-hour-long meetings were attended by several officials of the intelligence and security agencies.
