Key Railway Projects in Uttarakhand

Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Project-

The Central Government’s highly ambitious Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project, designed to connect the four Char Dham shrines, has achieved 49 percent completion. This 125 km project, with a total cost of Rs 24,659 crore, is a cornerstone of the state’s railway infrastructure. The project is expected to enhance connectivity to major pilgrimage sites, thereby boosting tourism and local economies.

Deoband-Roorkee Rail Line-

The Deoband-Roorkee rail line, spanning 27.5 km, is 96 percent complete, with a project cost of Rs 1,053 crore. This project is crucial for enhancing connectivity between these regions, easing transportation for residents and facilitating trade and commerce.

Kichha-Khatima Rail Line –

Another important project is the Kichha-Khatima rail line, which will cover 63 km and is being developed at a cost of Rs 228 crore. This project aims to improve accessibility and connectivity in these areas, contributing to regional development.

Development of Amrit stations

Eleven railway stations in Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Haridwar Junction, Harrawala, Kashipur Junction, Kathgodam, Kichha, Kotdwar, Lal Kuan Junction, Ramnagar, Roorkee, and Tanakpur, are being developed as Amrit stations at a cost of Rs 147 crore. These developments are expected to enhance passenger amenities, improve station infrastructure, and provide a better travel experience for commuters.

Ongoing Rail Projects

Between 2014 and 2025, Uttarakhand has seen the laying of 69 km of new rail tracks and the electrification of 303 km of rail lines. This is a significant achievement, considering that between 2009-2014, no new tracks were laid, and no lines were electrified. Currently, three ongoing rail projects covering 216 km are being developed at a total cost of Rs 25,941 crore. These projects reflect the central and state governments’ commitment to transforming Uttarakhand’s railway infrastructure.

Safety and passenger amenities

In terms of safety, the Kavach armor system is recommended for 49 route kilometers in the state. Additionally, since 2014, 100 rail flyovers and underpasses have been constructed, improving safety and reducing congestion. Passenger amenities have also seen significant improvements, with the installation of six lifts and 14 escalators at various stations. Furthermore, Wi-Fi facilities are available for passengers at 31 stations across the state, enhancing their travel experience.

Introduction of Vande Bharat trains

Uttarakhand is also benefiting from the introduction of two Vande Bharat trains, known for their speed, comfort, and state-of-the-art facilities. These trains are successfully serving the state, further enhancing its rail connectivity and passenger experience.
