New Delhi: Motorists using the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway this Sunday may experience delays as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is set to carry out important maintenance work on the Kasheli Creek bridge. This bridge is a vital link connecting Mumbai to North Maharashtra and further towards north India.

An MSRDC official said that all required traffic permissions have been obtained, and repair work is scheduled to commence around 9 am. “While one lane of the bridge will remain closed during repairs, overall traffic movement will not be restricted,” the official said.

Bridge collapse concerns addressed

Concerns over the bridge’s condition arose after a section of its median collapsed on January 18. Despite this, authorities have assured commuters that the structure remains safe for travel. The Kasheli Creek bridge, part of the old National Highway 3 (Agra-Bombay Road), is crucial for vehicles travelling to and from Bhiwandi, a major logistics hub. The affected portion—spanning 30 metres—belongs to an extra structure built in 1985, The Indian Express reported.

Currently, the four-lane bridge supports two-way traffic. However, once construction of a new parallel bridge is completed, the existing structure will cater to vehicles heading towards Thane, while the new bridge will facilitate traffic towards Nashik.

Mumbai-Nashik highway upgrade

The new bridge is being constructed as part of a larger Rs 1,000-crore expansion project covering a 23.5-km stretch of the Mumbai-Nashik highway, launched in 2022. So far, 70 per cent of the new bridge has been completed, with the Kasheli Creek segment accounting for Rs 100 crore of the total budget.
