New Delhi: Tensions flared on Republic Day outside the Indian High Commission in London as a pro-Khalistan protest was met with a spirited counter-demonstration by the Indian diaspora. Members of the diaspora had gathered at the embassy for a flag-hoisting ceremony to mark India’s 76th Republic Day but were confronted by pro-Khalistan activists protesting against India’s sovereignty. One Indian participant told ANI, “We saw Khalistanis insulting our national flag. Their actions don’t affect our nation’s integrity. Though fewer in number, our spirit is stronger. We will fight till our last breath.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) later expressed concern over escalating anti-India activities in the UK. Highlighting incidents of vandalism and intimidation by pro-Khalistani groups, including disruptions at UK screenings of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, the MEA urged the UK government to take strong action. “Freedom of speech and expression cannot be applied selectively.

“Those obstructing it must be held accountable,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Jaiswal reaffirmed that the Indian High Commission remains in close contact with the diaspora for their safety and welfare, urging UK authorities to act decisively against the perpetrators. The MEA spoke of the need for accountability to ensure such incidents do not undermine bilateral relations.

Khalistani threats escalate abroad

In 2023, the Indian High Commission in London faced a violent attack by Khalistani supporters promoting the secession of Punjab from India, according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Last month, that Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), led by India-designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, launched a “Kill Modi Politics” campaign in the UK, CNN News18 reported quoting sources.

Banners targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S. Jaishankar were displayed at Guru Nanak Gurdwara in West Bromwich. Sources revealed Pannun, labeled a global terrorist, is using networks in countries like Canada, the US, and the UK to push his agenda.
