Republic Day 2025: Which year of celebration is India marking this January?

New Delhi: India is all set for the Republic Day celebrations, which are observed on 26 January every year. India gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, while the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. But why January 26? Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, at a meeting of the Indian National Congress, declared India a ‘Purna Swaraj’. On the same date in 1950, the Constitution came into force.

As in previous years, there is confusion this year over which Republic Day India is celebrating. The question arises as to whether this year marks the 75th, 76th, or 77th Republic Day of India. We have the answer to this question—let’s explore it further.

Is this year’s Republic Day the 75th or 76th?

This confusion can be resolved by clarifying the misinterpretation of the anniversary dates. India gained independence on 15 August 1947, but it was only in 1950, after three years, that India adopted its Constitution. It should be noted that the Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949 but came into force on 26 January 1950.

The first Republic Day was held in 1950, and the second celebration was marked in 1951. India has completed 75 full years as a democratic republic (1950–2025), and in 2025, it enters its 76th year. This confusion often arises from the mistaken addition of an extra year during calculations.

Theme and Chief Guest for Republic Day 2025

This year’s Republic Day theme is “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Progress). It will highlight India’s rich culture and goals for a better future. The Indonesian President, His Excellency Prabowo Subianto, will serve as the chief guest. This will be his first visit to India as president since he took office in October 2024.

Republic Day Parade

The main event of the day is the Republic Day Parade, held in New Delhi. This parade will showcase the country’s cultural diversity and military strength. It will start at Rashtrapati Bhavan, proceed along Kartavya Path, pass India Gate, and end at the Red Fort. Before the parade begins, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial to honour the martyrs.
