Rajouri mystery disease: Death toll mounts to 17; team reaches village to start probe

New Delhi: The death toll in the mysterious disease that has swept Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri went up to 17, with the death of the sixth and last child of Mohammad Aslam from Badhaal village. The child succumbed at GMC Jammu.

According to sources, Yasmeena Jan, daughter Mohammad Aslam, was rushed to GMC Rajouri last Sunday from where she was referred to GMC Jammu on Monday where she died while undergoing treatment. Her condition was stated to be critical from day one. Yasmeen was the sole surviving child of Mohammad Aslam, who has now lost all six of his children to this ‘mysterious illness’. In the last one week, Aslam has lost four daughters, two sons and his maternal uncle and aunt.

High-level team reaches Badhaal

Minister for Health and Medical Education Sakina Itoo has reportedly stated that there is no need to panic, as she has ruled out the possibility of a virus or infection after carrying out tests at multiple institutes across India.

Meanwhile, a high level of team of Union Government reached the Badhaal area to ascertain the cause of the mysterious deaths. The team will investigate the mysterious deaths. The team includes experts from the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Agriculture, Chemicals and Fertilisers, and Water Resources, as well as specialists from Animal Husbandry, Food Safety, and Forensic Science.

In the past over one-and-a-half months, 17 people have died from the mysterious illness in the village. It is reported that the victims experienced fever, pain, nausea, and loss of consciousness before succumbing to the illness within days of being admitted to hospitals. The team will collaborate with the local administration to offer immediate relief and implement measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
