New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a ceremonial chadar to be presented on his behalf at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah during the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. “Greetings on the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. May this occasion bring happiness and peace into everyone’s lives, ” the PM wrote in a post on X.
The annual event, which honours the revered Sufi saint, attracts devotees from across India and around the world. This year marks the 813th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and it will also be the 11th consecutive year that PM Modi has made the offering since taking office in 2014. The ceremonial chadar, symbolising devotion and reverence, will be placed at the shrine of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (Mazar-e-Akhdas).
Kiren Rijiju, Jamal Siddiqui to offer chadar
During the Urs, such offerings are viewed as acts of worship and are believed to bring blessings and fulfill vows. Last year, Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Jamal Siddiqui had presented the chadar on PM Modi’s behalf at the 812th Urs. This year, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Jamal Siddiqui, president of the BJP Minority Front, will be entrusted with making the offering.
Ajmer Sharif Dargah hosts 813th Urs celebrations
Ajmer Sharif Dargah, dedicated to the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, is one of the most venerated spiritual sites in India. The Urs commemorates the saint’s death and draws millions of devotees from across the globe. The 813th Urs began on December 28, 2024.
It will feature a range of rituals and ceremonies throughout the duration of the festival. The shrine attracts people from all corners of the world, who come to seek blessings and participate in the spiritual celebrations. PM Modi’s ongoing participation through the Chadar offering underscores his respect for India’s diverse spiritual practices and highlights his recognition of the inclusive principles championed by Sufi saints like Khwaja Gharib Nawaz.
