New Delhi: North India will continue to shiver under a severe cold wave on Tuesday brought on by the prevailing western disturbance that is likely to cause isolated rains in plain areas and snowfall in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir in the western Himalayan region from January 1 to 5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Dense to very dense fog was reported in isolated areas of Rajasthan, while shallow to moderate foggy conditions predicted in isolated parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR region on Tuesday morning, it said in its daily weather bulletin.
Cold wave warning in north India
Cold wave conditions are expected in isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on 31st December.
Cold day conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Haryana, and Chandigarh on 31st December, with similar conditions anticipated in West Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh on 31st December and 1st January.
Dip in minimum temperatures across north India
Minimum temperatures have dropped below 0°C in many areas of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, and between 6-12°C in several parts of Northwest India. Today, the lowest minimum temperature recorded was 5.3°C at Chittorgarh in East Rajasthan, the lowest over the plains of the country, the IMD said.
Over the past 24 hours, there has been a decrease in minimum temperatures by 1-2°C in some areas of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, and by 2-5°C in parts of East Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Dense fog conditions are very likely to persist during the late night and early morning hours on Tuesday in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on December 31 and January 1. The fog is also expected to affect Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan until January 1, and Himachal Pradesh until January 2.
