Heavy snowfall alert issued for HP, Uttarakhand; check state-wise weather forecast

New Delhi: Heavy rain, snowfall, thunderstorms and dense fog have been forecasted for multiple regions across India for the next few days. Western Himalayan region, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, will experience widespread snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. North India and parts of Central India are also likely to face cold waves and dense fog.

According to Índia Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan, with isolated hailstorms in some areas. Meanwhile, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra brace for gusty winds and rainfall. Dense fog is predicted to affect visibility in parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Northeast India.

Weather forecast for Uttarakhand

Heavy snowfall is likely in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 28. Thunderstorms with hail are expected in parts of southeast Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. A cold wave is predicted to grip Himachal Pradesh from December 29 to 31, with severe cold day conditions on December 28.

Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on December 28. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in these areas, with hail storms forecasted over Punjab and Haryana. Dense fog will reduce visibility in parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi from December 28 to 30.

Forecast for central and west India

Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat will experience isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30-50 kmph on December 28. Hailstorms are also expected in Madhya Pradesh during this period. Rajasthan will see dense fog from December 28 to 31, while Vidarbha and Maharashtra may face lightning and scattered rain.

Dense to very dense fog will affect visibility in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura between December 28 and 29. Ground frost conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on December 28.

Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy snowfall and road closures

Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing heavy snowfall, disrupting daily life and causing significant travel issues. Cluster University in Srinagar postponed all examinations On December 28 due to inclement weather, with rescheduled dates to be announced soon.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah shared updates on road conditions between Jammu and Srinagar. Continuous snowfall from Banihal to Srinagar has stranded around 2,000 vehicles near the Qazigund tunnel. Despite snow clearance, icy roads have slowed traffic, with priority being given to families and children. District authorities are on-site with ambulances to handle emergencies and arrangements for overnight shelter are being made if needed.
