Economist and former PM Manmohan Singh passes away at 92

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 92. The  Congress stalwart was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi at around 8 pm and was admitted to the hospital’s emergency department.

He was dealing with a lung infection and experiencing breathing difficulties. Family members of the former prime minister, including his wife Gursharan Kaur, have started arriving at AIIMS, while Delhi Police is in the process of evacuating the premises. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has also arrived at AIIMS.

About Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s 14th prime minister, was born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab. An accomplished economist, he earned recognition from prestigious institutions like Cambridge and Oxford. The only Sikh to hold the position, he has had a remarkable career.

He has served in various government roles, including Economic Advisor in the Commerce Ministry, Chief Economic Advisor and Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He was the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, spearheading landmark economic reforms that reshaped India’s economy. He has also been Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Manmohan Singh

Honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and several international accolades, Singh represented India on various global platforms. In April this year, Manmohan Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha, earning praise from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his long and dedicated service. A member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991, he became prime minister in 2004, serving two terms. He has three daughters with his wife, Gursharan Kaur.
