Weather updates today: North India under grip of cold wave, IMD issues rain warning

New Delhi: The North India is under the grip of severe cold with parts of north India like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal registering sub-zero temperatures. An orange alert has been issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for rains in some districts in view of incoming Western Disturbance.

As per the IMD predictions, the biting cold coupled with rains is likely to condition harsher in states like Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana in the next 7 days.

An orange alert has been issued by IMD in Himachal Pradesh’s Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur and Mandi districts due to cold wave. A temperature of 11.6 degrees celcius was registered in Tabo which is said to be coldest in Himachal.

Lowest temperatures

Other areas in the state including Kusumseri, Sumdo also recorded low temperatures with 4.8 degrees Celsius, and 5.3 degrees celcius respectively. Una which is generally warm also recorded a minimum temperature of 1 degrees celcius. However, it remained hottest with a with a maximum of 23.8 degrees celcius.

In higher altitude areas including Kashmir, water pipes have freezed due to cold. The cold has also disrupted hydropower generation due to freezing of snow-fed rivers. With a yellow alert issued, the foggy conditions are likely to persist in Bhakra Dam dam area and parts of Balh valley in Mandi in Himachal.

IMD on Western disturbance

“An intense Western Disturbance is very likely to affect Northwest India from the night of December 26 onwards. Under its influence, an induced cyclonic circulation very likely to form over southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood on December 27, 2024. These systems likely to interact with lower levels easterlies leading to high moisture feeding from Arabian Sea as well as Bay of Bengal till 28th December,” the IMD said in a statement posted on X.
