New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have instructed their Lok Sabha MPs to ensure their presence in the lower House on December 13 and 14. The two days will witness a scheduled debate on the Constitution of India.
Both parties have issued a “three-line whip,” a formal notice requiring MPs to be present and vote as directed. BJP’s notice stated, “All Members are requested to be present in the House on both the days.” Similarly, Congress urged its MPs to attend the sessions.
What’s likely to be discussed in Parliament
The debate on the Constitution will take place over two days in each House of Parliament. In Lok Sabha, the debate is scheduled for December 13-14, while it will happen in Rajya Sabha on December 16-17.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to initiate the discussion in Rajya Sabha. In Lok Sabha, BJP chief JP Nadda and Union defence minister Rajnath Singh will play key roles.
Nadda, who is the leader of the house in Rajya Sabha, and Singh, the BJP’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha, are among the top leaders participating in the debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to respond to the debate in the Lok Sabha on December 14.
Efforts to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament
This debate came after weeks of disruptions in Parliament during the ongoing Winter Session, which began on November 25 and will continue until December 20.
Speaker Om Birla had chaired an all-party meeting to reach an agreement on resuming discussions in Parliament. As a result, members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha agreed to hold the debate on Indian Constitution next week.
Union Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized the importance of maintaining order during the session. “It is not good to disrupt parliamentary proceedings. We appeal to all Opposition leaders to honour the agreement and ensure Parliament functions smoothly from tomorrow,” he said.
