New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday (December 10) told the Supreme Court that it was awaiting the sanction of West Bengal government for prosecution of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former director Sandip Ghosh in the destruction of evidence and corruption case registered following the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar that there are two categories of accused in the case – the rape and murder case and those responsible for the destruction of evidence and corruption.

Financial irregularities case was separately investigated, Mehta told apex court

Mehta told the bench that the financial irregularities case was separately investigated and a chargesheet in the case has been filed and sanction from the state government of West Bengal government for prosecution of the accused in the case is awaited as they are public servants.

The top court was hearing a suo motu cognisance it had taken of the rape and murder of the on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

43 prosecution witnesses in the case have been examined, CBI told apex court

Mehta further told the bench that 43 prosecution witnesses in the rape and murder of on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been examined so far before the trial court and the trial in the case is likely to be concluded in a month.

CBI has filed a chargesheet naming Ghosh as prime accused in financial irregularities

The CBI has filed a chargesheet in connection with the financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital naming Ghosh as the prime accused. The Special CBI court, however, did not accept the chargesheet in the absence of sanction, which is required for prosecution of government employees.
