New Delhi: In a suspected fratricide incident two police personnel were found dead with bullet injuries inside a police vehicle on Sunday morning in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The incident, which unfolded near Rehambal, has cast a pall of gloom over the police department and raised serious questions about the safety and security of officers on duty. The information about the incident was received around 6:30 am on Sunday.

“Today at about 6.30 am, Police Station Rehembal received information that two policemen from Sopore travelling towards STC Talwara in a department vehicle have suffered bullet injuries due to firing. A report reached Rehambal police station indicating that two policemen, travelling from Sopore towards the STC Talwara training centre in a department vehicle, had sustained bullet injuries. Early investigations strongly suggest the incident was a case of fratricide, possibly followed by suicide. Senior police officers immediately rushed to the scene to initiate a comprehensive inquiry, further confirming the details of the case.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur, Amod Ashok Nagpure, confirmed the incident and provided key details regarding the travel plans of the deceased officers. He stated that the two officers were en route from Sopore to the Talwara training center when the incident occurred.

The SSP also clarified that an AK-47 rifle was used in the incident, further raising concerns about the handling and security of firearms within the police department. His statement also confirmed that, while two officers were found dead, a third officer traveling with them survived the incident unharmed and would be transported to GMC Udhampur for assessment and support.” Police officers have reached the spot and as per initial investigation, it has been established that an AK-47 rifle was used,” said SSP Nagpure.

“Two Police personnel have died and a third police personnel is safe. They will be taken to GMC Udhampur for postmortem and other procedures,” the police official said.

A full-scale investigation is underway, with senior officers actively pursuing all available leads to establish the exact sequence of events and the motive behind this tragic incident.
