New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday notified the appointment of Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna had on November 28 recommended to the Centre for appointment of Justice Manmohan as a judge of the top court.
Law Minister wrote on social media platform about elevation of Justice Manmohan
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, in a post on social media platform X announced the elevation of Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” Law Minister Meghwal wrote on X.
There are currently two vacancies in Supreme Court
There are currently two vacancies in the Supreme Court and once Justice Manmohan takes oath as a top court judge, the working strength of the apex court will rise to 33. The sanctioned strength of the apex court is 34, including the CJI.
Collegium on November 28 recommended Justice Manmohan’s name
The five-member collegium comprising CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and AS Oka in its meeting held on November 28 had deliberated on and had discussed the names of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts eligible for appointment to the Supreme Court and had recommended the name of Justice Manmohan for appointment as the top court judge.
What did the collegium say?
The collegium had said in its resolution that Justice Manmohan stands at serial number two in the combined all-India seniority of High Court judges and he is the senior-most Judge at the Delhi High Court. It had also noted that the bench of the Supreme Court at present is represented by only one Judge from the Delhi High Court.
“The Supreme Court Collegium has, therefore, unanimously recommended that Mr. Justice Manmohan be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” the collegium in its resolution said.
