Agartala: The Ministry of External Affairs increased security measures at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. Expressing its regret over the incident inside the premises on Monday, it observed that diplomatic and consular properties must not be targeted under any circumstances.

Issuing a statement, the ministry said that steps were being taken it increase the security of the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital and heir Deputy/Assistant High Commissions across the country. Videos have also gone viral on social media showing protesters storming inside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission office in Agartala.

What MEA said in statement

“The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances. Government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their Deputy/Assistant High Commissions in the country,” the ministry said in a statement.

The protests were reportedly organised by ‘Hindu Sangharsh Samity,’ a right-wing group and an affiliate of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Since the arrest of SKCON member Chinmoy Das Prabhu in Bangladesh, there have been large-scale protests across India.

Hindu right-wing group tried to submit a memorandum

Among the protesters, a delegation of six individuals had tried to submit a memorandum to the Assistant High Commissioner. Speaking to reporters, VHP’secretary in Tripura Sankar Roy said, “Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh, attacks are being constantly carried out on Hindus and Hindu temples in the country .” He added, “ISKCON’s Chinmoy Prabhu raised his voice against the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh recently. He was held and sent to jail on false charges. We want his unconditional release,” Roy further.

Earlier on Friday, India asked Bangladesh must live up to its responsibility of protecting minorities in the country. It also expressed serious concern over the increase in violence against Hindus.
