New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday (November 26) filed before a city court requisite sanctions obtained from authorities concerned to prosecute 30 accused persons in in a corruption case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs scam involving Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The CBI had earlier on September 20 informed the special court that it had obtained the required sanction to prosecute Lalu Prasad Yadav in the corruption case relating to the alleged land-for-jobs scam.

The central agency on Tuesday informed Special Judge Vishal Gogne that the requisite sanctions to prosecute one public servant was still awaited and sought more time to obtain the remaining sanctions.

Court directed CBI to submit the sanction by December 23

The special judge took the documents filed by the CBI on record and directed the central agency to submit the sanction by December 23, when the matter would be heard by the court, news agency PTI reported.

The CBI had on November 7 told the special court that there were about 30 accused in the case against whom the requisite prosecution sanctions were awaited and had sought 15 more days to obtain the requisite sanctions. The court had asked the central agency to expedite the process and directed the CBI to submit the requisite sanctions by November 26.

What is the case?

The CBI has alleged that during his tenure as the railway minister during the period between 2004-2009 Lalu Prasad Yadav indulged in corruption for appointment of Group D substitutes in Indian Railways. It has further alleged that the candidates were asked to transfer land as bribe in return for jobs in Indian Railways and that no advertisement or any public notice was issued for these appointments.

The CBI had registered the case on May 18, 2022 against Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others, including Rabri Devi, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s wife and former Bihar chief minister.

CBI filed main charge sheet in October 2022

The CBI had filed the main chargesheet in the corruption case in October 2022 against 16 persons, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and their daughter Misa Bharti, a Rajya Sabha MP. The CBI named former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as an accused in the corruption case for the first time in the second chargesheet.
