Dehradun: The divisional commissioner of Kumaon region reviewed the cases of violations of local land laws in the purchase of lands by the outsiders. The highest number of cases of violation of local land laws in the purchase of lands by outsiders has surfaced in Nainital district.

Officers, who participated at a meeting held by the divisional commissioner of Kumaon Deepak Rawat in Nainital circuit house, recommended to put a ban on the purchase of lands by outsiders in Kumoan’s four districts- Nainital, Udhamsingh Nagar, Almora and Bageshwar. Rawat was reviewing the implementation of local land laws in the sale and purchase of lands in different districts of Kumaon region.

Officers suggested to allow the outsiders to purchase 250 square meters lands only in Pithoragarh

Most of the officers suggested that outsiders should be currently allowed to purchase 250 square meters, as per the provision of the local land laws, only in Pithoragarh district. They also underlined the need for a ban on the sale and purchase of agricultural lands in Tarai-bhabar areas, besides the industrial area.

Commissioner Rawat directed the officials to expedite probe into cases of violation of local land laws

The divisional commissioner has directed all the SDMs and Tehsildar to probe the lands purchased with special purposes in different districts of Kumaon region. He has asked the officials to identify those who have purchased lands for religious purposes and using the same for running hotels and resorts. He directed the officials concerned to ensure stern action against such violators. The recommendations made by the officials will be sent to the government.

Nainital tops the list in the violation of local land laws

At the meeting, 144 cases of violation of local land laws, which have surfaced in different districts of Kumaon region, were discussed. The highest number of 74 cases of the violation of local land laws has come into light in Nainital district. The number of such cases is 24 in Almora district, 41 in Udhamsingh Nagar district and 4 in Bageshwar district. So far, there are no cases of the violation of local land laws in Champawat and Pithoragarh.

The state government has adopted a tough stand to put a check on the violation of local land laws in the sale and purchase of land. The government is also under a plan to make a stringent local land law. Currently, an outsider can purchase a piece of land measuring 250 square meter without seeking permission from the authorities concerned. There is provision for outsiders to purchase land above 250 square meters with special purposes by taking permission from the local administration.
