Three people lost their lives when their car plunged into the Ramganga river from a partially constructed bridge on Sunday. Police suspect that the driver, relying on a navigation system, was misguided into taking an unsafe route.

Driver was relying on GPS navigation

The incident took place on Sunday morning as the victims were travelling from Bareilly to attend a wedding in Dataganj, Badaun district. According to the police, the driver was relying on GPS navigation, which led them to the bridge that was left incomplete due to floods earlier this year. The front section of the bridge had been washed away, but the GPS system failed to reflect this change.

The driver, unaware of the bridge’s condition and with no warning signs or safety barriers in place, drove onto the compromised structure. The car plunged into the river, killing all three occupants instantly. The victims were identified as Vivek, Kaushal Kumar, who were brothers, and their friend.

Police managed to retrieve the vehicle and recover the bodies

Upon receiving information, police teams from Faridpur in Bareilly and Dataganj in Badaun, along with local authorities, rushed to the scene. With the help of a JCB machine, they managed to retrieve the vehicle and recover the bodies. Heavy police deployment was arranged at the site to manage the crowd of locals who gathered after the accident, causing traffic congestion in the area.

The police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and are investigating the incident. Circle Officer Ashutosh Shivam confirmed that the damage to the bridge was caused by floods earlier this year, which had rendered it unsafe for travel. The victims, unaware of the situation, were misled by GPS navigation, resulting in the fatal crash.
