Sambhal: Tensions rose in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, during a survey of Shahi Jama Masjid after a mob pelted stones at the police team on Sunday. The incident took place around 7.30 am when the survey, ordered by the court, was being conducted to address claims made by the Hindu side that the mosque was originally a Hindu temple called Harihar temple. As the survey began, a large crowd gathered outside the mosque, leading to disruptions.

Despite efforts by officials to control the crowd and calm the situation, the protests began throwing stones at the police. In response, the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the miscreants and ensure safety. Police forces from five different police stations, along with the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP), were deployed in the area to maintain order. The situation remains tense, with police urging the public to maintain peace.

Several detained

Police have detained several people involved in the stone-pelting incident and are working to identify others using video footage from the scene. Authorities have also appealed to residents not to believe or spread rumours and assured strict action against anyone attempting to create further disturbances.

A video of the incident surfaced, showing some people targeting the police with stones. In the aftermath, the area saw many shops and markets closed and several slippers were found scattered on the road. The police have warned that any further troublemakers will face legal consequences.

Survey of Shahi Jama Masjid

The survey of Shahi Jama Masjid has been a matter of contention following the Hindu community’s claims that the mosque was once a temple. A court order mandated the survey, which had already begun on November 19.

On November 24, a survey team arrived again to continue the process. While there have been some protests, the mosque committee has given consent for the survey, and it is being carried out under the supervision of both parties involved.
