New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on Tuesday (November 12) said that oral submissions for urgent listing of cases will not be permitted and urged the lawyers to send only emails or written letters for the same stating the reasons for urgency.
“No written or oral mentionings anymore. Only in email or written slip/letters. Just state the reasons for urgency,” CJI Khanna, who took over as the 51st CJI on Monday, said.
During the tenure of former CJI DY Chandrachud, lawyers were mentioned their cases for urgent listing before the CJI-led bench on the grounds of urgency at the start of the day’s proceedings.

CJI Khanna, who was sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu at a function held in the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, expressed deep honour in leading the judiciary, the third pillar of democracy and said in his first statement said that it is the constitutional duty of the judiciary to ensure easy access to justice to all citizens regardless of status, wealth or power. The CJI further said that “Making judgments comprehensible to the citizens and promoting mediation will be a priority,”

“Judiciary is an integral, yet distinct and independent part of the governance system. The Constitution trusts upon us the role of constitutional guardian, protector of fundamental rights, and responsibility to fulfil the important task of being a service provider of justice,” CJI Khanna said in his first statement on Monday.

“The justice delivery framework in terms of providing equal treatment necessitates fair opportunity to succeed to all, regardless of status, wealth or power, and a just and unbiased adjudication. These mark our core principles,” the statement said.
“The responsibility entrusted upon us affirms our commitment as protectors of citizens’ rights and as dispute resolvers. It is our constitutional duty to ensure easy access to justice to all citizens of our great nation,” the statement added.
