New Delhi: As Donald Trump strode towards victory in the US Presidential race, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris called off her election night speech. Cedric Richmond, co-chair of Harris campaign said, “You won’t hear from the vice president tonight but you will hear from her tomorrow.”
After emerging victorious in key states of North Carolina and Georgia, the lead taken by Trump has dimmed Harris’ chances of victory in a neck-and-neck contest. Trump, who is 78, is all set to return to the White House.
Besides, the Republican Party has regained control of the Senate successfully by flipping two Democratic seats, which increases Trump’s political momentum even more.
Even though Harris had campaigned fiercely, she is currently falling short of expectations in crucial regions where Democrats had anticipated to secure a stronger position. After the emerging outcome, Harris’s campaign put on hold a planned watch party in Washington DC, where she was supposed to speak.
Mood in Florida ‘positive’
Donald Trump campaign spokesperson Jason Miller dubbed the mood at his base in Florida as “positive” as results tilt in favour of the former president. Market reactions have also been fast, with the US dollar shooting sharply and Bitcoin hitting record highs as investors respond to possibility of a Trump win. Traders have been betting big on a Donald Trump victory and Wednesday’s markets reflected that sentiment.
Till now, Donald Trump has romped home to victories in Republican bastion states like Florida and Texas, bringing his total to 243 electoral votes compared to Harris’s 194. The winner will require 270 votes to take the presidency.
Earlier, Kamala Harris’s camp had said that the race to the White House was extremely close, calling it as “razor thin”. Now, her path to win can only be via the key ‘Blue Wall’ swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
