How to recognise sociopathic traits: Insights from a former Miss Universe finalist

Mumbai: Kanika Batra-Matheson, a model and former Miss Universe finalist, recently disclosed her sociopathic personality type and shared tips on recognising similar traits in others. As described by Psychology Today, the term ‘sociopath’ is an outdated and informal label for individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APSD). Those with this condition are often characterised by a lack of conscience, which allows them to exploit and manipulate others without feeling remorse.

In a TikTok video, Ms Batra-Matheson discussed how sociopaths are adept at lying and manipulation, often using a tactic known as ‘mirroring’ to influence others. She noted that one telltale sign is their unsettling gaze, as sociopaths tend to have ‘dead eyes’ and blink less frequently. She even mentioned that she had to train herself to blink more to avoid unsettling others.

Additionally, she suggested putting sociopaths in emotionally charged situations to reveal their true nature, warning that their facade of sanity and kindness can quickly crumble.

Ms Batra-Matheson also shared that her sociopathic tendencies stem from a ‘traumatic’ childhood and expressed a desire to raise awareness about recognising toxic individuals and understanding the challenges in forming genuine connections.

Sociopathic Traits

Common indicators of ASPD include:

  • Lack of empathy for others
  • Impulsive actions
  • Controlling behaviour through threats or aggression
  • Manipulation using charm or intelligence
  • Inability to learn from mistakes or punishments
  • Lying for personal advantage
  • A tendency towards violence and physical confrontations
  • Superficial interpersonal relationships
  • Criminal behaviour, such as theft
  • Threatening self-harm as a manipulative tactic
  • Substance abuse issues
  • Difficulty managing responsibilities, such as employment or finances

Communication styles of individuals with ASPD

Those with ASPD can be highly manipulative. Some may resort to direct threats, while others employ charm or passive-aggressive tactics to conceal their intentions.

Navigating relationships with someone with ASPD

When dealing with a person diagnosed with ASPD, it’s crucial to prioritise your safety. While you may want to help, it can be challenging since individuals with ASPD are often unaware of their condition and reluctant to seek treatment. Here are some strategies to protect yourself:

  • Educate yourself: Familiarise yourself with ASPD signs to recognize harmful behaviours and understand the underlying motivations.
  • Avoid confrontation: Situations can quickly escalate, so maintain a neutral demeanour and avoid showing strong emotions that could make you vulnerable.
  • Establish boundaries: Keep interactions brief and focused, avoiding emotional engagement and sharing personal details.
  • Seek support: Lean on trusted friends and family for emotional backing, and consider consulting a mental health professional for guidance.
  • Do not attempt to change them: Individuals with ASPD typically do not recognise their issues, and trying to alter their behaviour may provoke anger or further manipulation.

Individuals with ASPD are not inherently evil; they grapple with a disorder that impedes their ability to empathise and adhere to social norms. If you or someone you know may have ASPD, consulting a mental health professional can provide insight into potential treatments or strategies for managing manipulative behaviours.
