All the ten franchises announced their respective retention and released list on October 31, with Punjab Kings holding on to just two uncapped players in Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh and get into the auction well equipped with funds and ready to build a new squad. It seemed like a good strategy used by the Aussie legend, with stars like Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran and Arshdeep Singh not being retained ahead of the mega auction.

Ponting, in an interview on The ICC Review, said that he was looking forward to building a squad from scratch for the Punjab franchise. He further said that whatever the franchise has done it’s well documented and he is excited about the fresh start. Ponting said that they are going with just two uncapped players with an idea of going into the auction with the biggest purse. The former Australian captain also revealed how he wants the franchise, who have failed to make the IPL playoffs since 2014, to play a completely fresh brand of cricket.
