Nileswaram: Even as more than 150 people were injured that was caused by the fireworks explosion, a major tragedy similar to that of the 2016 Puttingal fire tragedy in Kollam was averted due to the use of Chinese crackers during the Anjootambalam Veererkavu festival in Nileswaram. The temple committee purchased Chinese crackers worth Rs 30,175 for the festival, even though crackers are not traditionally a part of Theyyam celebrations. Firecrackers are typically ignited during the most intense and dramatic moments of Theyyam performance.

Those connected with temple festivals in Nileswaram stated that Chinese crackers, which have lower explosive power compared to traditionally and locally made crackers, likely helped reduce the intensity of the blast.

“If the temple had traditional crackers, especially from those purchased from Sivakasi had been used, the impact could have been more severe, potentially endangering the lives of devotees. We understand that they have decided to buy Chinese crackers during the last moment as there were no availability of local ones. Even when Chinese crackers are used, there are clear rules that states that one should maintain a 100-meter distance from the ignition point. The authorities should ensure that all protocols are followed”, said K Rajagopal, advocate and BJP leader from Nileswaram.

In all festivals, especially, in central and North Malabar Kerala, the Chinese crackers have been dominating the market for quite some time and are popular among consumers due to their variety and cost. The price of these crackers ranges from Rs 50 to Rs 8,000, depending on the variety.

“The intensity of the fire mishap was lower as Chinese crackers were used, which primarily focus on light displays. However, the temple authorities carelessly stored them in a shed with large ventilation and burst crackers only a few metres away from the storage room. It was a major tragedy that was avoided here. This should be an eye opener going forwards as the Theyyam season has begun in North Malabar and hence such fireworks and crackers are expected to be used again”, said Mohanan, an employee in the revenue department.
