Andrew McDonald signs contract extension as Australia men’s head coach until 2027

New Delhi: Cricket Australia (CA) has announced the contract extension of head coach Andrew McDonald until the end of 2027. The extension will see McDonald lead the team through many major international tournaments including the next ICC World Test Championship, the defence of the 2027 ODI World Cup, the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Since taking charge in 2022, he has done incredibly well with Australian men’s cricket team, including winning the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship, as well as retaining the Ashes in England. Under his coaching, the Aussies are currently ranked as No.1 in Tests and No. 2 in ODI and T20I formats.

He signed a four-year deal in 2022 and his contract would have ended midway through 2026 just after the 2026 T20 World Cup. If McDonald had walked away in mid-2026, the new head coach would have been under a lot of pressure due to Australia’s schedule in 2027.

Australia’s schedule in 2027

The Aussies are scheduled to host New Zealand for a four-match Test series in December and January of 2026. After that, they will tour India for a five-match Test series in January and February. The Australian team will return home to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Test cricket in March and are scheduled to face England. There will be the World Test Championship final if Australia qualify, followed by the Ashes tour.

The next ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October 2027 and keeping McDonald in place during that period means that the board want stability. McDonald expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and said that he is very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players and staff who are invested in the development of this group.

“I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success and development of this group. The professionalism, commitment and experience of my fellow coaches and the wider staff have ensured the journey has been extremely successful but just as importantly created a culture of unity, trust and inclusivity” McDonald said.

“International cricket has many challenges for all teams and I am particularly proud how the group, players and staff, across all formats have navigated those together” he added.
