The BMC advised Mumbaikars to burst firecrackers only in open areas and not in the streets or crowded places. It appealed to the citizens to burn as less firecrackers as possible and control air and noise pollution in the city. Rise in air and noise pollution can lead to health issues in the vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, elderly people and patients suffering from diseases like asthma, and also animals, said the BMC. Like the national capital Delhi, Mumbai has also been witnessing major dip in the air quality around Diwali in the past few years.

BMC advisory on firecrackers

  1. Avoid noise and air pollution by celebrating Diwali as festival of lights and not firecrackers.
  2. Prioritise soundless firecrackers
  3. Burst firecrackers that cause minimum air pollution
  4. Burst crackers only till 10 pm
  5. Be responsible towards vulnerable groups and do not burn loud crackers
  6. Safety of all should be top priority
  7. While bursting crackers, wear cotton clothes and do not wear loose clothes
  8. Burn firecrackers in open spaces only
  9. Do not burst firecrackers in crowded places like roads, streets, etc.

This time, Chhoti Diwali and Lakshmi Puja will be observed on the same day. The auspicious timing for Diwali Puja or Lakshmi Puja on October 31 for Mumbai is between 06:57 pm to 08:36 pm.
