Relief for Telangana residents, no power tariff hike after ERC rejects proposal

Hyderabad: Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) has rejected a proposal from state-owned power distribution companies to hike power tariffs, in a relief to the residents of the state.

After a thorough review, the committee decided against raising the fixed charges to Rs 50 for those who consume more than 300 units of electricity.

ERC Chairman Sri Ranga Rao said that the fixed charges of Rs 10 will continue as is and the panel has approved the proposal of discoms to increase the fixed charges if the electricity consumption exceeds 800 units.

Key decisions by the commission are as follows:

No hike in tariffs.

Fixed charges adjustments: Hike in charges for those who consume over 300 units were denied, charges for those who consume more than 800 units is fixed at Rs 100.

Fixed charges for LT industries: For low tension industries, fixed charges have been lowered from Rs 150 to Rs 100 while proposal to increase charges for poultry farms was rejected.

Charges for HT industries: For high tension industries, current charges for 11, 33 and 132 Kv connections will remain the same, including for bus, railways services.

Lift Irrigation fixed charge has been approved at Rs 270.

No additional charges have been applied for peak hours but usage between 10 pm and 6 am will incur an additional charge of Rs 1.50 per unit.

The commission also acknowledged that the state government owes Rs 25,000 crore to them and recommendations have been given to expedite the payments.
