New Delhi: On October 28th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, will jointly inaugurate the Tata Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, marking a watershed moment in India’s defence manufacturing sector. This historic event will witness the inauguration of the first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft in India, signifying a new era of self-reliance in defence production.

The complex, a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus, will manufacture the C-295 transport aircraft, a strategic acquisition for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The contract, signed in September 2021, involves the production of 56 aircraft for a total of Rs 21,935 crore.

“It will involve the full development of a complete ecosystem from the manufacture to assembly, test and qualification, to delivery and maintenance of the complete lifecycle of the aircraft,” the Prime Minister’s office said in a statement on Saturday.

This ambitious project will witness the creation of a complete ecosystem for the C-295, encompassing everything from manufacturing and assembly to testing, qualification, delivery, and lifecycle maintenance. While Airbus will deliver 16 C-295s in flyaway condition, the remaining 40 will be assembled at the Vadodara facility, marking a significant leap forward in India’s Indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

The C-295, a tactical airlifter, is designed to enhance the IAF’s logistical capabilities, particularly in forward areas near the contested border with China. It will replace the ageing Avro transport aircraft, which have been in service since the early 1960s, providing the IAF with a much-needed modernisation boost.

The project’s success hinges on a collaborative effort between the government, private sector, and defense public sector units, including Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

The C-295s will be equipped with indigenous electronic warfare suites developed by BEL and BDL, further enhancing the aircraft’s capabilities and showcasing India’s technological prowess.

The project also extends beyond the C-295. Airbus Helicopters, in partnership with TASL, has selected eight locations in India for setting up a production line for the H125 chopper, a single-engine civil helicopter. The first H125 is expected to roll out of an Indian facility in 2026.
