‘Appreciate India’s efforts’: Germany praises PM Modi’s push for peace in Ukraine war

New Delhi: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed appreciation for India’s push for peace in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He also lauded India’s efforts to speak to all stakeholders urging peace in the region.

Taking to X, he wrote, “I expressly support India in advocating a lasting, just peace in Ukraine and using its reliable relations with all parties to contribute to it. As partners, it is important to be able to talk directly about many topics – including geopolitical issues.”

The India-Germany joint statement condemned terrorism in all forms

The joint statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), after PM Modi and Scholz co-chaired the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations, said they also “unequivocally condemned” terrorism and violent extremism in all forms.

“The leaders expressed their deepest concern over the war raging on in Ukraine, including its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences. They reiterated the need for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in line with international law, consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement further said.

Russia and Italy too appreciated India’s concerns

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni expressed appreciation for PM Modi’s concerns over the Russia-Ukraine war. Recently Putin also called PM Modi as India’s friend. He thanked PM Modi for his support for peace between both nations. Similarly, appreciating India’s efforts, Italian PM Georgia Meloni also said that India and China can play an important role in peace in the region.

Earlier on Friday, India and Germany expressed their “deepest concern” over the continuing war between the two countries. During their meeting in New Delhi, PM Modi, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz shared views on the “use or threat of use” of nuclear weapons and called it “unacceptable”.
