Madurai: The Southwest Monsoon has intensified in Tamil Nadu, bringing widespread rain to various parts of the state. Madurai district has been severely affected, with heavy rain causing flooding in several areas. The rain, which started at 3:30 pm yesterday, continued throughout the night, inundating homes, hospitals and shops.

Traffic was severely impacted in central Madurai areas like Koripalayam, Southern Vasal and KK Nagar. Matuthavani and Periyar bus stations were also flooded. According to IMD, Madurai received 100 mm of rainfall.

The heavy rain has forced the District Collectors to declare holidays for schools in Madurai East and Madurai North revenue circles, as well as Theni district. Madurai received 10 cm of rain in just 11 hours, from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm yesterday.

The continuous downpour has caused widespread flooding, with many homes and businesses submerged. Residents have blamed the lack of proper drainage systems for the flooding. Chief Minister Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin have ordered rescue operations and are closely monitoring the situation.

Tamil Nadu Rain Fury: Schools Closed, Rescue Ops Underway

A heavy rain warning has been issued for Madurai today, prompting Collector Sangeeta to declare a holiday for schools in Madurai East and Madurai North revenue divisions. The Tamil Nadu government is working to provide relief to affected areas.

The heavy rain is expected to continue in the coming days, with atmospheric circulation causing widespread showers in southern districts. Other affected districts include Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari.
