Jose Mourinho ridicules referee’s red card call against Man United

New Delhi: Manchester United’s match against Fenerbahce was going to be a high-drama Europa Cup game as Mourinho faced the Premier League side he had managed for two years. Amidst the 1-1 draw, Jose Mourinho was shown the red card right before the hour mark after he had a heated exchange with the referee for denying Fenerbahce a penalty appeal.

Reflecting on the incident, Mourinho didn’t speak on the non-penalty; instead remarked on the referee’s remarks for the whole episode. Mourinho mocked the referee and noted that he was bemused how the referee was able to see both the penalty box and the former United coach’s action in the touchline.

This won’t be Mourinho’s first offence against a referee. In May 2023, he was awarded a four-match ban in European games for abusing the referee after his Roma team lost in the Europa League final to Sevilla. He noted late that he wouldn’t appeal his red card as there was no engagement for him after the final.

Mourinho’s antics could have cost the game for Fenerbahce

Fans were divided about Mourinho’s demeanour, with many quipping that it was his playing style. However, this doesn’t change the fact that Mourinho’s judgement was obstructed by his antics. When seen in replays, the decision not to award a penalty was seen as correct, as there was minimal contact for the appeal to stand.

This means that Mourinho’s reaction was unjust. Having just scored the equalizer, Mourinho’s antics did mean that the team’s focus shifted for a while. There is a question if it could have cost the game for Fenerbahce.

As he takes on the challenge of leading a new squad, he will seek to promote more discipline within his team. Most importantly, his temperament could lead to risks of the team moving their focus from the tactical plans. Unfazed by the incident, Mourinho later had the same energy during the press conference and went on to say that his future job in a club who are not playing in the European competition.

Reacting to the draw, Mourinho felt that Fenerbahce were a better team than United. He noted that the Turkish club was playing a team above their level and felt that it was great how Fenerbahce turned up for the game despite being behind. Mourinho had previously led the United to the Europa League in 2017 during his brief stint at Old Trafford and took the job with the Turkish club this season.
