New Delhi: Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday (October 24) announced that Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) with effect from November 11.

CJI DY Chandrachud, who will be demitting office on November 10, had recently recommended the name of Justice Khanna, who is the senior most apex court judge after CJI Chandrachud, to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” Law minister Meghwal wrote on Thursday on social media platform X.

Justice Khanna, after taking oath as the next CJI, will have over six months tenure as the Chief Justice of India before his retirement on May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with Bar Council of Delhi in 1983

Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He initially practiced in the district courts in the national capital. Later, he started practice in the Delhi High Court and tribunals in various fields of law, such as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.

As per the Supreme Court website, Justice Khanna had a long tenure as the senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department. He was appointed as the standing counsel (civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi In 2004. He had also appeared and argued in a number of criminal cases before the Delhi High Court as an Additional Public Prosecutor and as an amicus curie.

Justice Khanna was elevated as a Delhi high Court judge in 2005

Justice Khanna was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and in 2006, he was made a permanent judge of the high court. During his tenure at the High Court, he held the position of chairman/Judge-in-charge, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and the District Court Mediation Centres.

Justice Khanna was elevated as a Supreme Court judge in 2019

Justice Khanna was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019. He held the post of chairman, Supreme Court Legal Service Committee at the apex court and presently he is the executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority and a member of the governing counsel of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
