Old ‘religious’ videos of Jemimah Rodrigues surface amid Gymkhana membership row

New Delhi: Star Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has found herself embroiled in a controversy following the suspension of her membership at the Khar Gymkhana in Mumbai. The Gymkhana officials took the decision during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) after reportedly her father Ivan Rodrigues was found carrying out “religious activities” on the club premises. Some members deemed it to be an attempt to “convert” people to Christianity.

During the meeting that was held on Sunday, the club members objected over Ivan’s activities at the club – who was deemed to be misusing Jemimah’s membership benefits, wrongly taking the privilege to book the Presidential Hall at concessional rates under her daughter’s name. Upon investigation, it was found that Ivan performed such rituals around 35 times over the past year and a half – a direct violation of the Gymkhana laws.

This hampered the other members in not getting the desired space and therefore the club officials, prioritising the comfort and security of all members, felt the need to act swiftly in view of the raised complaints. Ever since the news broke, the social media hasn’t been silent and a few users, after much digging, have found some old videos of Jemimah where she can be seen preaching the word of God to some large congregations.

Jemimah heavily trolled

Jemimah’s membership getting cancelled over the issue has sparked mixed reactions among fans. A set of netizens are criticising the family’s actions as they suggest it reflects poorly on her reputation as a famous Indian cricketer. Some are even comparing her with Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who has often faced flak for promoting Islam on his social media posts and delivering sermons as well.

Jemimah’s membership was previously a matter of pride as she was the first Indian female cricketer to have received honorary membership at Khar Gymkhana in 2023. Her achievements in cricket have been immense, considering her 24-year age. She has been a vital cog for India in all three formats and has become a prominent figure in the sport. She recently represented the Indian team at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in the UAE.
