Kazan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after his arrival in Kazan for the 16th BRICS summit. During the meeting, Putin playfully talked about their close bond, saying, “You understand me without a translator.” In his televised introductory remarks, Putin said, “We have such a relationship that I felt you do not need any translator.” The two leaders greeted each other warmly, with Modi extending his signature hug.

Putin, in his opening statements, underscored the robust collaboration between India and Russia within the BRICS framework. “We greatly value the India-Russia partnership, as both countries are founding members. We are witnessing increased cooperation among our legislatures, ongoing dialogue between our foreign ministers, and positive growth in trade,” he said. He also said that important decisions need to be made in Kazan to further enhance BRICS cooperation.

PM Modi urges peaceful resolution to Russia-Ukraine conflict

Addressing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution. “We are in constant touch regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have said before, we believe that issues should be resolved peacefully,” he said. “We fully support the prompt return of peace and stability. Our efforts prioritise humanity and India is ready to extend all possible cooperation in the future,” he added.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a warm welcome in Kazan from Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, and enjoyed traditional Tatar cuisine, including chak-chak and salted karavai. PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the reception, saying, “A connect like no other!” The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan is taking place from October 22 to 24 under Russia’s chairmanship.
