Bengaluru: Schools to remain closed today as heavy rains disrupt normal life

Bengaluru: The authorities in Bengaluru announced the closure of schools and Anganwadis for today as heavy rains continue to affect normal life in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued had earlier warned of heavy rains in Karnataka because of the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal.

“Due to continuous rain in Bengaluru Urban district, a holiday has been declared on October 21 for all Anganwadi centers, as well as private and aided primary and high schools, as a precautionary measure in the interest of students,” the statement issued by the authorities said. There was confusions among students and their parents as school buses were operating before the announcement. Several parents said that their children had already left for school. The authorities had however said that all colleges will remain open in the city and that no holiday has been declared for them.

Waterlogging in various parts of Bengaluru

Traffic Traffic Police on Monday said that several areas including Bannerghatta Road, Jayanagar, Hosur Road, and Madiwala experiencing waterlogging. Several underpasses also witnessed heavy flooding due to heavy rains. Those riding bikes have been asked to take alternate routes. Apart from Bengaluru, heavy rains are also expected in Konkan and Goa, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh, the IMD added.

IMD issues statement on Karnataka weather

Issuing a statement, the IMD also said that coastal regions of the country may witness very heavy rainfall due to the upper air cyclonic circulation over the central Andaman Sea moving towards the North Andaman Sea. “Very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over South Interior Karnataka and Andaman & Nicobar,” the department had said.
