Mumbai: Karwa Chauth is a highly revered festival celebrated by married women across India, including Bangalore, where it holds immense significance. On this day, women observe a nirjala fast, refraining from both food and water from sunrise until the moonrise. This year’s Karwa Chauth is being celebrated on Sunday, 20 October 2024, with women eagerly awaiting the moonrise to break their fast.
The fast begins early in the morning at 6:46 AM, with the pre-dawn meal known as sargi, provided by the mother-in-law. From that moment onward, women do not consume any food or water until the moon rises. Throughout the day, they adorn themselves in traditional attire, including beautiful sarees, jewellery, and solah shringar, as a way of celebrating their marital status. As evening approaches, they gather in groups for the Karwa Chauth puja, offering prayers to Goddess Parvati, seeking blessings for their husbands’ well-being.

After sighting the moon, women will offer water (arghya) to it, following traditional rituals, and complete their fast by drinking water and consuming food, typically fed to them by their husbands.
