New Delhi: In a major development following the recent violence in Mahasi area of Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, the Public Works Department (PWD) and revenue magistrates have issued notices to a total of 23 properties. Of these, 20 belong to members of the Muslim community and three to the Hindu community. The notices were affixed to the homes of individuals including Haji Meraj, Nizam Ali Ahmed, and Ram Prasad, among others.
The administrative action comes in the wake of escalating tensions after a violent incident on October 13, which erupted during the idol immersion of Goddess Durga. The violence culminated in the killing of Ramgopal Mishra, leading to widespread unrest that resulted in arson and damage to properties.

Authorities are particularly focused on ensuring that every construction in the area complies with regulations. Notices have been served to property owners, demanding explanations for building activities. The homes of the main accused in the violence, Abdul Hamid and Sarfaraz, have also been targeted with these notices.
Officials emphasised that construction must be approved by the district administration prior to commencement, particularly on the main thoroughfare of Kundasar Mahasi, which is crucial for local traffic. Any structures built without the necessary permissions are deemed illegal.
Properties could be demolished
The PWD has warned that failure to respond to the notices in a timely manner could lead to severe consequences, including the demolition of properties situated within 60 feet of the roadway.
Sarfaraz, one of the primary suspects in the Bahraich violence, was apprehended near the Nepal border after an encounter with cops. He suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. He is accused of shooting Ramgopal during the clashes that erupted during the festivities.
