New Delhi: A sniffer dog helped cops bust a Rs 1.07 crore theft case in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district. The dog, named Penny, a Dobermann, played a key role in assisting the police to arrest the thieves and recover the entire cash.
The two accused — Budha Solanki and his accomplice Vikram Solanki — had allegedly stolen the booty on October 12, an official told the news agency PTI.
What was the incident
A 52-year-old farmer sold off a piece of land near the Lothal archaeological site close to his village recently. He got Rs 1.07 crore by selling it. The farmer left for Tarapur in Anand district for some work after he locked his house, according to sub-inspector PN Gohil of Koth police station.
The farmer intended to buy another piece of land using the proceeds, he kept the cash in two plastic bags and left them inside his kutcha house on October 10. On October 12 night, some thieves broke into his house by removing some bricks near the window and made good with the bags.
Police were informed about the theft on October 13. The cops questioned 30 suspects and 14 history sheeters in the nearby area. The police team also deployed a dog squad which included Penny to trace the criminals.
How Penny played a key role in zeroing in on accused
As the operation was underway, on Thursday, Penny led the cops near a spot some distance away from Budha’s house. “He was already on our list of suspects because he knew about the cash. When the accused was lined up with other suspects, Penny stopped near him for a while,” Gohil was quoted as saying by PTI. This confirmed that Budha was behind the theft.
The police team carried out a raid in his house and recovered Rs 53.9 lakh. During questioning, Budha confessed to the crime and also informed the police about Vikram’s role in the theft. The rest of the amount was found at Vikram’s house.
