‘Hamas no longer capable of terror strikes’: US on Yahya Sinwar’s killing

Washington: US President Joe Biden hailed Israel’s elimination of Yahya Sinwar and said that the country had every right to kill the Hamas leader. The President also observed that the terrorist organisation is no longer capable of carrying out similar strikes like October 7.

Issuing a statement, the US President observed that there was now a possibility of a political settlement in Gaza that would provide a better future for both the Palestinian and Israeli people. Pointing out that Sinwar was an obstacle to achieving all of those goals, the US President observed that while there were no more obstacles with his elimination, a lot of work remained to be done.

What the US President’s statement said

“He was the mastermind of the October 7th massacres, rapes, and kidnappings. It was on his orders that Hamas terrorists invaded Israel to intentionally – and with unspeakable savagery – kill and massacre civilians,” the statement added.

It also noted that that while over 1,200 people were killed, around 46 people were among 250 civilians who were taken hostage. “Four of whom are believed to be still alive and held by Hamas terrorists. Sinwar is the man most responsible for this, and for so much of what followed,” the President’s message further said.

Apart from him, Vice President Kamala Harris also noted that the killing of Sinwar has allowed ending the war in Gaza. Speaking further the Vice President said that the Palestinian people “must be given the right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.”

On Thursday, Israel announced the killing of Sinwar during a battle with Israeli forces in Gaza. It called the killing a “military and moral achievement for the Israeli army”. Hailing the killing of the Hamas leader Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that while this was not the end of the war in Gaza, it was the beginning of the end. He also called Sinwar’s death an “important landmark in the decline of the evil rule of Hamas”.

Iran condemns killing

Condemning the killing, Iran said that the assassination would strengthen the resistance in the region. “He will become a model for the youth and children who will carry forward his path toward the liberation of Palestine,” the Iranian Mission in the UN said in a post on X.
