Mumbai: Amid a series of bomb threats to domestic and international flights in India, the Mumbai Police have detained a 17-year-old boy from Chhattisgarh for allegedly issuing the hoax threats online on Monday, causing disruptions to three international flights departing from the Maharashtra capital.

According to police, the boy posted the messages in an attempt to frame a 31-year-old man with whom he had previously run a mobile shop, leading to financial losses. Mumbai police tracked down the class 11 student to Chhattisgarh and summoned him and his father on Monday to Mumbai for questioning.

On Tuesday, the boy was questioned and detained after a technical analysis of the bomb threat messages posted on X revealed his involvement. He has been sent to four-day custody for police inquiry by the Juvenile Justice Board, police said.

Bomb threats to Air India flights

The bomb threats disrupted three international flights—two operated by IndiGo and one by Air India. Air India flight AI 119 from Mumbai to New York, carrying 239 passengers and 19 crew, was diverted to Delhi mid-air early Monday due to the threat. IndiGo flights to Muscat and Jeddah were delayed for security checks but later continued as scheduled.

How police tracked the boy

An initial investigation by Mumbai police revealed that an individual using the handles @fazluddin69 and @fazluddin27077 had posted the bomb threat messages. In response, Sahar police station registered an FIR against the user of the two handles.

Through digital forensics, police traced the 31-year-old man to Chhattisgarh. However, a further investigation uncovered that a 17-year-old boy, who had a history of disputes with the man, was actually responsible for posting the messages.

The minor has a financial dispute of approximately Rs 3 lakh with the man and has also filed a sexual assault case against him under the POCSO Act. Preliminary findings suggest that the boy posted the hoax messages to target the man, according to a police officer.

The 31-year-old man has not been arrested, as no evidence of his involvement has been found so far, police stated.

Authorities indicated that the minor was expelled from school due to prolonged absences. A Chhattisgarh police officer noted that the fathers of both the minor and the man were partners in the footwear business.

Recently, the boy and the 31-year-old man had ventured into a mobile business but encountered financial losses, leading to their ongoing disputes.
