Jammu and Kashmir: NC-Congress alliance meet today to decide on government formation

Srinagar: The National Conference and its ally Congress will hold meetings on Friday to prepare for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. The alliance secured 48 seats in the recently announced assembly election results.

The first meeting will be of the Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir unit’s Legislative Party in the afternoon to elect their leader followed by a meeting of the National Conference (NC) MLAs with the allies Congress and the CPI(M) to forward the process of government formation, NC president Farooq Abdullah said.

In the assembly elections, held after a 10-year gap, Congress secured six seats, while its ally, the National Conference, won 42. The BJP claimed 29 seats, the JKPDP won three, and the People’s Conference, CPI(M), and AAP each secured one seat. Independent candidates won seven seats.

“The Congress MLAs will meet tomorrow afternoon in Srinagar under the chairmanship of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Tariq Hameed Karra to elect the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party,” a spokesperson said.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the National Conference legislature party on Thursday. He is most likely to become the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister again as the NC-Congress stakes claim to form the government in the Union territory.

Speaking to reporters after being elected their leader on Thursday, Omar thanked his party MLAs for “reposing their faith in him and giving a chance to form the government”.

He also mentioned the support from four Independent MLAs to the NC that increased the party’s individual tally to 46 seats.
