Uttarakhand weather: Heavy rains forecasted today after record-breaking heat in state

Dehradun: After a dry spell of four-five days, the weather in Uttarakhand is expected to change again and there may be heavy rains across the state on Wednesday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a yellow alert in many districts for heavy downpour and thunderstorms.

Uttarakhand many districts witnessed a rise in maximum and minimum temperatures. In state capital Dehradun, the maximum temperature was recorded at 35.6 degrees on Tuesday, which is five degrees above normal. The same was the case with Pantnagar, Mukteshwar and New Tehri and many other cities.

Yellow alert in Nainital and Pithoragarh

A yellow alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning has been sounded for Nainital, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Champawat and Almora districts. Whereas, light to moderate rain may lash the other districts like Dehradun, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Udham Singh Nagar on Wednesday.

Relief is expected as temperature may come down 

Since the entire state has been experiencing a significant rise in mercury over the past few days, with temperatures rising five to six degrees above normal. This intense heat is affecting everyone, from the plains to the mountains. However, a change in the weather is expected on Wednesday, bringing some relief to the hilly districts and parts of the plains as temperatures are forecasted to drop.

Rising heat in Uttarakhand has broken 50 years old record 

The rising heat in Uttarakhand has shattered a 50-year record. For the first time in September, temperatures have soared past 36 degrees Celsius. On Monday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius, which is six degrees above normal. This marks the first time since 1974 that Dehradun’s September temperatures have exceeded 36 degrees Celsius.

Heavy rains forecast on 26 and 27 September

The weather has been dry for the past few days across most areas, including Dehradun. The sun has been shining brightly throughout the day, making the heat unbearable for many. However, mornings and evenings remain pleasant. According to IMD, the spells of rain will continue in the state on Thursday and Friday and rains may drench the state bringing temperature low.
