‘Provide evidence or apologise’: Congress to Kangana Ranaut over Sonia Gandhi claims

New Delhi: The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Monday hit back at BJP MP Kangana Ranaut for her “baseless statement” on Sonia Gandhi, demanding that she either provide evidence for her claims or face legal action. Ranaut had previously accused the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government of taking loans and diverting the funds to Sonia Gandhi.

State minister Vikramaditya Singh condemned Ranaut’s remarks. He said that Kangana’s comments reflected the “intellectual bankruptcy” of the Mandi MP. He said that if Ranaut failed to substantiate her allegations, the Congress party would file a defamation lawsuit against her.

‘No more absurd claim’

“There is no more absurd claim than suggesting that funds allocated for development or coming from the Centre are being handed over to Sonia Gandhi,” Singh remarked. He further said, “I publicly dare BJP MP Kangana Ranaut to present evidence showing even Rs 1 being diverted. If not, she should apologise to Sonia Gandhi for these baseless accusations. Otherwise, the Congress will proceed with a defamation case.” Singh had previously contested and lost the Mandi parliamentary seat to Ranaut.

Kangana alleges misuse of state funds

The reaction from Congress comes as Kangana accused that the Himachal government, under Congress rule, drained the state’s funds by taking disaster-related loans and sending the money to Sonia Gandhi. “They take out loans and hand them over to Sonia Gandhi, which is why the state’s treasury is depleted. If the Centre provides disaster relief funds, it ends up in the chief minister’s Relief Fund, but everyone knows it eventually goes to the Sonia Relief Fund,” Ranaut said during a public address in Manali on Sunday.

Singh took a swipe at Ranaut. He said that Kangana is frustrated over delays in the release of her film ‘Emergency’ by the censor board. “She rarely visits Himachal Pradesh, but since her film is ‘stuck’ with the censor board, she may be disappointed and is now making unfounded claims from her home in Manali,” Singh said.

Ranaut had recently stated that her movie ‘Emergency’, in which she portrays former prime minister Indira Gandhi, was pending clearance by the censor board.
