New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has come to light from West Bengal’s capital Kolkata, a hairstylist associated with the Bengali film industry tried to take her own life by self-immolation, NDTV reported.
The woman took a extreme step allegedly after she was refused work on the directions of an association of hairstylists which works in the Bengali cinema.
The hairstylist set herself ablaze, and her daughter’s quick intervention saved her mother’s life. The woman has sustained burns and is recuperating at a city hospital
A complaint has been lodged against as many as 11 members of the hairdresser association. The Bengali media reported that some time back, the woman had raised the demand that members of the association be elected rather than being selected. She reportedly faced a backlash for this. In May, she was suspended by the association for three months.
In a note purportedly written by her and which has gone viral on social media, the hairstylist levelled allegations that even though the three-month suspension has finished, she was not being allowed to work in a proper manner. “I am not unable to fulfill my family responsibilities,” the note said, as she named 11 members of the association in it. It is learnt that her husband has been unwell.
There are serious allegations that the woman was not permitted to seek work on her own and her potential clients were asked not to employ her.
Several personalities from the Bengali film industry, including filmmaker Srijit Mukherji, actor Parambrata Chatterjee and Sudipta Chakraborty, rushed to the hospital to enquire about the hairstylist’s condition after her suicide bid.
