PM Modi to embark on 3-day visit to US on September 21: What’s on agenda

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the US for three days beginning Saturday. The visit is likely to focus on Indo-Pacific stability, ways to resolve ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and concerns of the global South.

During his three-day visit PM Modi will take part in the annual Quad summit in Wilmington in Delaware, address a summit at the United Nations General Assembly in New York and hold bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden and several other world leaders. He is also scheduled to address a gathering of the Indian community and hold a roundtable with CEOs of top American firms working in the technology sector.

Prime Minister Modi will attend the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit which is being hosted by Biden on Saturday. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida will also take part in the annual summit. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi will hold separate bilateral talks with all three Quad leaders.

The Quad summit will focus on discussing ways to bolster cooperation among the member nations for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said there will be a strong focus on peace, progress and stability in the Indo-Pacific at the Quad summit.

Other global issues such as the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, climate change, health security, counterterrorism, may also come up for discussion at the summit.

‘Summit of the Future’ in New York

After concluding the Quad summit, PM Modi will head to New York on September 22 for the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly. A host of issues including concerns of the Global South are expected to figure in the summit.

The summit is expected to see participation of several global leaders. The theme of the Summit is ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’. PM Modi is also scheduled to interact with CEOs of US-based firms to foster greater collaborations between the two countries in areas of AI, quantum computing and semiconductors and biotechnology. While in New York, Prime Minister will address a gathering of the Indian community at Long Island on September 22.
