RG Kar rape-murder: Sanjay Roy’s clothes not seized for 2 days after crime, says CBI

New Delhi: Making yet another startling revelation, CBI officials said on Wednesday that the Tala police didn’t seize the clothes of Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape-murder of 31-year-old junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, for two days even though his role in the crime became quite apparent on August 10.

The trainee doctor was had been taking rest and went off to sleep in the seminar hall of the hospital when she was pounced upon. The suspect Sanjay Roy was captured on CCTV entering the seminar hall.

Officials told PTI that Sanjay Roy’s role in the rape-murder had surfaced the next day of the crime, however the Tala Police made an “unnecessary delay of two days” in seizing his clothes and other belongings. The clothes could have been a strong evidence against Roy, they pointed out.

‘Malafide intentions’

It was on August 14, five days after the crime, that the probe agency took over the investigation. Last week, Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of the hospital, Abhijit Mondal, the station in-charge of Tala Police, were arrested by the CBI for their alleged role in tampering with the evidence. The officials said that the duo was evasive in their replies. The officials also alleged that they had “malafide intentions”, and they attempted to tamper the evidence. The agency is investigating a possible criminal plot hatched by Roy, Ghosh and Mondal. They sniff a nexus between them.

The CBI is planning to examine all phone calls made between them to bust the possibility of the criminal plot. The officials intend to confront Roy and Mondal with the CCTV footage from the Tala police station, the crime scene, and the medical college, PTI reported. The duo had made sure that the cremation was done quickly despite the victim’s family demanding a second autopsy, officials added. The agency also said that Ghosh stayed “willfully absent” from the scene of crime. The post-mortem had revealed that the victim’s body had 25 internal and external injuries.
